An Airblue Airbus A321-200, registration AP-BJB performing flight ED-220 from Islamabad (Pakistan) to Manchester,EN (UK) with 180 people on board, was on approach to Trabzon (Turkey) at a height of about 1000 feet for a scheduled fuel stop, when the airplane was hit by a lightning causing damage to electrical systems. The crew declared emergency and managed to land the airplane safely on runway 29 and taxied the airplane to the apron, where passengers disembarked normally and were bussed to the terminal.

The onward flight was cancelled, the passengers put to hotels. A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration AP-BIF resumed the flight the following day taking most of the passengers to Manchester with a delay of 28 hours, while the others were rebooked onto other flights.

Passenger Usman Chaudhry told The Aviation Herald, that after a smooth approach the airplane entered turbulence while flying overhead the Black Sea about 10 minutes prior to landing. About 2 minutes later he heard a loud bang and saw a huge flash to the left side of the airplane. No announcements were made until after landing, no malfunction became apparent to the passengers. Cabin crew were getting ready for an evacuation. Usman Chaudhry perceived the cabin crew as very scared and in panic. After landing rumours circulated, that the flight crew was considering to ditch in the Black Sea. Ground staff told the passenger later, that the blast in the air could be heard on the ground. "I am glad, that I am safe and everyone on board was safe, too. For me this is all, what matters...", Usman Chaudhry concluded.

Usman forunately (or otherwise!), you survived and i am glad, ofcourse. Next time remember not to even think, let alone open your big mouth and challenge god's wrath by joking about it! Hats off to the captain and staff of that aeroplane, for hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, and keeping our friend in one piece. Now live wisely and have a good time.

expert opinion
By shery on Friday, Jan 9th 2009 17:58Z

hello readers, i have read all raised humours about the whole incident. let me first introduce myself. i'm shery, qualified aircraft accident investigator and pilot with huge flying experience. i would only comment about Mr Usman Chaudary,,,, sir no doubt u must have an experience of just viewing the air crash movies. After analyzing the whole episode i hav concluded 2 things...1st technical...Aircraft was insulated and well equipped with state of art technology,, that's why it did not bursted up in air. secondly and more importantly...the calmness maintained by pilot and correct jugdment of situation and overall handling of critical and grave In-Flight emergency which could have resulted in disaster and world would only be watching air crash documentary after years. so i give the whole credit to the Captain and other FLight crew who held passnges calm and even captain says I WAS AND AM PROUD OF MY CREW SPECIALLY MY PURSER{MS --------------} KEEP GUESIING...........

By Usman Chaudhry on Tuesday, Jan 6th 2009 11:50Z

Aren't Modern Aircraft insulated???
By Raza Ali Khan on Tuesday, Jan 6th 2009 10:28Z

I had ever thought that modern aircraft must be insulated against electricity bolts, which is quite common in rough weathers above.
I hope the Engineers at the Aviation Industry find out a solution to protect aircraft from such incidents

'Crash land onto the Black Sea'
By Steve Jobs on Tuesday, Jan 6th 2009 07:57Z

I wonder how Usman Chaudhry knowd that withless than 2 minutes from landing, that the 'pilots were ready to crash onto the Black Sea for emergency.' I suggest this is fantasy! Glad to hear that the outcome was fine.

I am sorry

I was one of the passengers at that flight...
By Usman Chaudhry on Sunday, Jan 4th 2009 15:24Z

As im a big fan of Discovery channel and love to watch documentaries regarding such events, in the spur of a second, i could recall all of those air crash investigation programms in my mind and alot was going on through my mind cells as i was very clear of the circumstances and was ready to face every thing. The pilot managed to land on the airport at Trabzon which is not less than any miricle. The ground staf at the airport told us that they heard a BIG Blast in the air and they were preety much sure that the plane was not coming down safely as the noise of the blast was so huge. That was a nightmare happening right in front of my eyes and im glad to be alive.

I was one of the passengers at that flight...
By Usman Chaudhry on Sunday, Jan 4th 2009 15:24Z

I was sitting on one of the exit row seats...we were flying smoothly and suddenly there was some turbulance in the plane...people sitting around were bit concerned about that.. i said to the guy sitting next to me after this... "I hope we dont become part of those Air Crash Investigations on Discovery Channel" and he laughed out.. suddenly after 2 minutes we heard a big Bang and saw a big flash..i just went into shock right there as i was talking about such event and it seemed it was all happening in front of my eyes.. i saw the cabin crew going into deep panic and the Pilots were ready to crash land onto the Black sea for emergency. One of the cabin crew members said to me "Sir as im sitting on the right side with the emergency door and im alone here, would you be able to operate the emergency exit door if things go wrong", and i was more than 100% clear of the situation after i heard these words.
